3 Inuit Ivory Winged Objects
#180012
Three Ancient Inuit walrus ivory winged pieces dating from Old Bering Sea to Punuk Periods. The oldest piece here is the fragile and elegant remains of a piece which has been in the ground for a very long time. The purpose of these winged objects has been variously explained as the crowns of ceremonial staffs, and as counterbalancing “wings” for harpoons. See The Far North, 2000 Years of American Eskimo and Indian Art, National Gallery of Art, 1976, pages 17 -20 for similar examples. 100 BC-1600 AD.
