Ashanti Talking Drum, Ghana
A well sculpted Ashanti "talking drum", with beautiful vertical designs along its side. These were important symbols of royal prestige and power and were indispensable accompaniments to the King and Queen's court. The diminutive size of this example suggests it may have been used by a young person apprenticing for the powerful position of King's drummer. Good condition, with old drum's head characteristically dry and needing replacement. Unusual is the presence of the talking drum sticks. Circa pre-1950
