Chinese advertising poster, Shanghai Union Brewery
#180001

A rare advertising poster for the Shanghai Union Brewery Shanghai.

Established by the British in 1911, the company became famous not only as the first big brewer in the city, but for its modernist building on Yi Chang Road errected in 1934 and designed by Hungarian architect Laszlo Hudec, which survived the Japanese occupation.

This poster, perhaps uncharacteristically for a company that came to be associated with modernist design, shows a hostess in Chinese dress serving a traditional scholar (albeit a very happy looking one). In good condition, with minor damage, professionally repaired, at top portion. In custom frame.

Likely circa 1920.
