Eastern Middle Hills Himalayan Mask, Nepal
#170270
A mask from Nepal's eastern middle hills region. The sculpture has followed the natural contours of the wood's contoured form, and the face seems to be almost an inherent aspect of the wood, as if the artisan had "set this character free". There are signs of extensive use, and a glossy patina. It is the face of the ritual clown, the masked "trickster". This mask has a fascinating resemblance to certain aspects of the same trickster masks seen in Eskimo tradition. A fastening hole on each side of the mask. Excellent condition with minor loss on right side at fastening hole. Circa Early 20th century.
