Four Rare African Bracelets/Anklets

 

 

A heavy hinged bracelet with intricate linear design. The channel on the side was designed to create a hollow chamber to lighten the weight. Very early work judging by the high copper content and superior casting quality. Benin. 16th century or earlier.

A hinged Benin cuff with a complex locking mechanism. Exceptional craftsmanship, sophisticated hinge, brass appearance, no damage except missing lock pins. 17th-19th century.

A Gans, pre-Lobi or Senufo cuff with intricate locking mechanism. Pre-1800.

A Fang marriage anklet. Chocolate patina on old brass with engraved designs and knot designs on either side. Lack of iron content suggests 17th-18th century. Worn the entire life of a woman, never to be removed except in death or divorce.
