Aboriginal Incised Hairpin

An aboriginal ceremonial hair ornament, a "Pun-Mun". These were worn by men in their hair and held in hand during special rainmaking ceremonies. Made of hardwood with incised totemic carving on both sides with some traces of pipeclay pigment still visible. Subtle notches along entire perimeter, the ornament terminating in a stick for placing in the hair or holding in hand. Collected Jigalong Mission Western Australia in the 1940's and surely of considerable age when collected. Great old surface from age and handling. Ex-Baptist Mission Society South Australia Collection. Impossible to replace. Extremely rare.
