African Oba Prestige Staff

An Oba prestige staff, Nigeria, West Africa. Bronze with high copper content. Deep patina. A crocodile holds a frog in his jaws, symbolizing the power over life and death. Intricate scroll work engraving. Excellent condition with small ancient bend between end of crocodile’s tale and circular Benin base. This would have been the finale on an ivory or other important staff. This may well have been a royal piece, the crocodile used to portray the Oba. On custom stand. Identified by tool signature, metal content, and patina.
