Three Extremely Fine Aboriginal Central Desert Stone Carved Boomerangs
#153031

1. A pre-contact hunting boomerang with grooved parallel line decoration and traces of applied red ochre pigment. Several spinifex resin plugs and a superb worn patina from handling over a very long period of time. Collected near Hermannsburg in the 1920's by a visitor to the Lutheran Mission there who received it from an aboriginal who had just "come in" to the mission from the bush. Certainly a very old artifact already, probably 19th century. An old chip to the end. Beautiful stone tooling marks.

2. A pre-contact, stone cut hardwood hooked boomerang with grooved linear decoration. Excellent patina from use, ochre and fat. Believed to have been collected during the making of the Overland Telegraph line, which would place it in the 1880's.

3. A pre-contact, stone cut hardwood hunting boomerang with beautiful surface glow and patina. Parallel grooves are worn down from use and handling. Excellent condition with a 7 cm / 3 in. crack on reverse that does not penetrate to front. 19th century.

Lengths range from: 57 cm / 22.5 in – 66.5 cm / 26.5 in
