South Pentecost Bowl #160005
Very old wooden Bowl, South Pentecost, New Hebrides (now Vanuatu). Four-legged bowl showing signs of great age and wear. Possibly a cave piece. Low, shallow form. Some loss at either end and on one of supports only adds to the character of this very old piece. An almost identical example collected by Speiser on Pentecost Island, see Bonnemaison, Kaufmann, Huffman + Tryon (eds.), "Arts of Vanuatua", p 228. This piece is circa 19th century, and may be much earlier, possibly a cave piece.
