Lobi divining stick, Burkina Faso, West Africa. Upon the advice of priest diviners, Lobi place figures in shrines to secure protection. The size, pose and features of these figures were determined by the diviner aided by his stick. Worn heavy wood with glossy, thick brown patina. Beak like feature with a sculpted body on top. Minor wear and loss to base of stick. On custom stand. A power piece. Early to mid 20th century.
