Aboriginal Churinga Chisel #153009
An aboriginal chisel from Western Desert Region, South Australia. With worn totemistic churinga- like engravings on both sides. Old resin on either end. Some of these chisels were considered important objects and were handed down through generations. This particular one obviously had become a ceremonial object. The examples of chisels at South Australian Museum have no markings. Acquired prior to WW2 by a station owner from Meningie, South Australia, and clearly old at that time. Very powerful, very rare.
Length: 53.5 cm / 21 in
