Inuit Prehistoric Goggle Preform
#158018

An ancient unfinished carving of snow goggles from a walrus ivory tusk. Perhaps one of the most interesting Inuit artifacts we have handled. Seen clearly are the indentations in the ancient ivory for the eyes, bridge for nose, and curve for face. Essential to protect the eyes from the bright sun reflecting off the snow, the snow goggles were part of every Eskimo hunter’s essential kit. It is uncertain why this ancient carving was abandoned, but it is likely rarer than any finished eyewear that has survived. From St. Lawrence Island. Okvik Period. 100 AD-700AD. Dark, thick patina, worn, smooth surfaces.
