Inuit Stone Lamp
#158046

A massive and ancient Inuit stone lamp. Fashioned in antiquity from hardstone, the shallow trough would have been filled with seal oil to provide heat and light. Collected by Arctic trader Captain John Backland who owned the four topmast schooner C.S. Holmes and operated out of Seattle in the early 20th century, plying the cold waters up to Alaska. Heavy encrustation of seal oil. A spot of modern wax adhering to one surface that can be easily removed. Excellent condition. Late Thule, early Historic Period Circa 1500-1700 AD. Could be earlier. An extraordinary specimen.
