Nias Bone Pipe
#154041

A superb figural Nias, Indonesia bone pipe in the form of a standing male sentinel. Expressive brow, large triangular nose, the top of the head the loading place for tobacco. Small circular scarification on upper portion of either cheek. Worn, smooth surfaces, fine patina. Conservatively 19th century. Excellent condition with evidence of long use. Minor age cracks. On a custom stand. Material from Nias, off Sumatra has always been scarce, and post the very unfortunate tsunami of 2004, and Sumatran earthquake of 2005, has become very rare. Ex-Sotheby's Tribal Art, New York.
