Sioux Pemmican Pounder

A pemmican pounder, Northern Plains, American Indian. Heavy, rounded stone stitched in buffalo hide and sinew sewn, attached to a wooden handle, also covered with buffalo hide. This pounder was used for pounding buffalo and other meat into jerky, an important source of protein for a people constantly on the move. Circa War Years, 1860-1880. Very rare to find a complete example. Ex- Ohio collection.
