New Guinea Asmat Headhunting Figure

Asmat headhunting figure, collected 1966 by Dutch missionaries in the NW Asmat area. The ancestor figure has the representation of a Praying Mantis, symbol of headhunting. Chalky colors applied to wood. Overall good condition. A couple of age cracks. Related example can be seen amongst the material brought back by Michael Rockefeller, and now in the displayed collection Metropolitan Museum of New York.
