New Guinea Wooden Christ
#160022

New Guinea Christian wooden crucifix religious panel. Typical of the Kambot people are story boards, telling the story and history of the Kambot people. Unusual and rare, however, is the present carving showing the influence of Christianity on an Oceanic culture, and its incorporation of this new influence into traditional art. Here the native carver shows Christ with his nailed hands on the cross, but with a very different expression than that to which we are accustomed. Rare and highly collectible. Circa 1960-70.
