Pre-Columbian Mound Builder Celt #161025
A large, polished hard greenstone celt from Moundbuilder Culture. A well defined edge at one end, culminating at a point at other. De minimus loss at point, and on edge, otherwise excellent, intact, and unrestored. An old label reads "possibly Georgia". Circa 9th-12th century AD This piece was in the collection of Dr. Robert Oppenheimer, reknowned nuclear physicist and "father of the atomic bomb", and was purchased by a prominent New York art dealer, at that time located in Santa Fe, from Dr. Oppenheimer’s widow. A statement of provenance accompanies the piece.
