Pre-Columbian Taino Knobbed Axe #161028
A Taino stone handled axe with ear-like knobs from the ancient Antilles. An unusually shaped stone axe featuring two knob/ear like forms on the top of a squarish haft. These knobs give the form a zoomorphic character. The knobs may have also had the practical purpose of preventing the ax from slipping off any wooden handle to which it might have been attached. Example of similar monolithic stone axe illustrated in "Twenty-Fifth Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology", Washington, D.C. 1907, pl xiv Excellent condition. Circa 1000-1500 AD. Rare.
