African Kirdi Embossed Iron Shield
#152010

A Kirdi wandala, Cameroon, embossed iron shield. Field collected in the 1940's, but already an antique at that time: circa late 19th century. Metal shields evolved in Africa as an adaptation from cane and leather shields. Intricate embossing radiating from a defined center with spider web geometric pattern. Handle wrapped in old cloth. Rare in this condition and size. See "Shields from the Collections of Barbier-Mueller" for a similar example.
