Naga Painted Leather Shield

An old Naga headhunter shield, Konyak people, northeastern India, made from Mithun hide. The large, essentially rectangular form bisected by a central ridge terminating in aan apex at the upper end. Pigmented designs in white on the front surface. Encrusted surfaces. Cane strap on reverse, with glossy highlights around handle. Some wear and small area of loss at bottom of shield, otherwise excellent condition. Circa late 19th/early 20th century.
