Solomon Islands Parrying Shield Head #160035
A very old Solomon Islands parrying shield fragment. This is the decorated head portion of the classic Solomon Island “shield”, a long shaft with this "sickle" shaped head attached. Used as an offensive as well as defensive record, and well documented in the literature. While this piece is but a fragment broken from its shaft, perhaps in combat, and has a chip missing from its bend, it works as a complete piece. Iconic totemistic design which appears on all of these treasured and valued weapons. Hardwood, glossy patina. Circa 19th century.
