Large Aboriginal Central Desert Bean Shield
#153054

A very old and unusually large aboriginal beanwood shield from Central Desert, Australia. Unlike many of the orange colored ochred beanwood shields, this one has a dark brown surface, with the characteristic parallel grooves now worn. There is a warm surface patina throughout, with a very large insert handle. Made with great care, and substantially longer than most beanwood shields. Very good condition considering its age. A small hole, probably naturally occuring towards the base on the back side, that does not penetrate. A few nicks around the edges, and a spot of old white paint on the front which we have not attempted to remove. Stone cut, beautiful worn surface and shape, with the center portion of the rear of the shield showing a great raised aspect. Circa late 19th century, early 20th century. From the collection of an Australian collector with impeccable taste. Comes with a custom metal stand. The only beanwood shield we have seen like it.
